Production Expeditions
Where Story Meets the Sea

We believe in the transformative power of documentary film and underwater storytelling. A single image, a single sequence, a single moment of genuine encounter beneath the surface - these are the things that shift perspectives, inspire action, and connect people to a world most will never see for themselves. That belief is important to us. And it shapes how we support the productions we work with.

A Bit About Us

Most of this website speaks as "we" - and for good reason, APE is a tribe. However, this part of the story is rather personal, so for a moment, the tone will change.

Ivan's journey into diving began over twenty years ago, behind an underwater camera, drawn by the same pull that brings most people toward conservation photography. Caz's path began in film school in the UK, dreaming of becoming an underwater filmmaker. Interestingly, our paths crossed at sea - working alongside a well-known underwater filmmaker, now a good friend, on a project built around the purpose we had both been chasing. That day became the conversation that, two years later, became the full brand of APE.

Storytelling, and the responsibility that comes with holding a camera underwater, stays close to our hearts - and it is a big part of why this section of the brand means so much to us.

This story reflects why, when the purpose of a production resonates with us, we bring everything we have to make it happen.

What We Provide

We handle the full logistical architecture of film productions in Timor-Leste's marine environments - everything the operation requires on the ground, from vehicles and boats to accommodation, food, and local permits.

Timor-Leste is a country that rewards local knowledge and experience. We have spent over a decade building both, learning the locations, the seasons, the currents, the creatures, and the light. We have a good understanding of which communities to speak with before arriving, and how to help ensure that every operation leaves the places it works in better than it found them.

Our food is sourced locally wherever possible, prepared with the nutritional quality that serious fieldwork demands, health is not an afterthought on our expeditions - it is a foundation.

Timor-Leste Through the Lens

These waters are extraordinary to dive. They are equally extraordinary to film. The visibility, the biodiversity, the untouched quality of reefs that have seen very little camera time. Timor-Leste offers a backdrop that is genuinely rare in an era where the world's most famous dive sites are increasingly familiar. New species. Unexplored sites. Cetacean migration corridors. A living maritime culture with over 40,000 years of connection to the sea.

Timor-Leste also asks something of those who work within it - flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to find solutions with limited resources. Infrastructure is still developing, and things do not always go to plan. What we bring is the experience to anticipate that, and the determination to find a way.

Whether you are arriving with a full production crew and a developed story, or an independent filmmaker with a vision still taking shape - we welcome the conversation.

We are not simply a logistics provider, we are creative collaborators. If the story you want to tell lives beneath the surface of Timor Leste, we want to help you tell it - carefully, and with everything we have learned here.
