Supporting Ocean Discovery
We are losing species faster than we are able to describe them. Each one carrying a story that would take a lifetime to understand - and disappearing before we have learned to read it properly. So many stories to tell.

One of Earth's Last Frontiers
Timor-Leste sits within the Coral Triangle - one of the most biodiverse marine environments on the planet, yet it remains among the least formally surveyed. Less than ten percent of its marine environment has been documented. New species continue to be discovered by those patient and prepared enough to reach them.
APE Expeditions exists to make serious scientific fieldwork possible in a country where the infrastructure to support it is still developing - and where the rewards are extraordinary for those willing to navigate that complexity. We handle the full logistical architecture of remote scientific operations in Timor-Leste - so that the people we work with can focus entirely on the science itself.
This means everything the operation requires on the ground - from vehicles and boats to accommodation, food, and local permits. It means communication with coastal communities before arrival and throughout the operation. It means safety planning for remote environments, contingency preparation, and the kind of on-the-ground experience that only comes from over a decade of working in this country.
A Team That Goes Beyond Logistics
Our field team includes active marine biologists who understand the scientific process, speak the language of fieldwork, and are available to assist visiting researchers in ways that extend well beyond the field.
Whether that means contributing to data collection, assisting with species identification, maintaining research continuity between visits, or simply understanding what a research team needs without having to be told - our team brings genuine scientific engagement to every operation.
We are not experts in your specific field. But we are experienced, curious, and deeply invested in the work that happens here.
Keeping Research Alive Between Visits
One of the most persistent challenges for international research teams working in remote environments is continuity. Expeditions end, data collection pauses, months pass before the next visit.
APE Expeditions can provide ongoing field presence between research visits - monitoring sites, collecting agreed data points, maintaining relationships with local communities, and ensuring that projects remain alive and moving in the intervals between international team deployments.
Building Timor-Leste's Scientific Future
We involve Timorese marine scientists in every expedition we support. Through multi-year internship programmes, we are actively developing the next generation of Timorese field researchers - training young scientists in dive operations, data collection, safety protocols, and the full complexity of running scientific expeditions in remote coastal environments.
Every expedition we support will include at least one Timorese intern, present not as an observer but as an active participant, learning alongside the operation and building the skills to lead this work independently in the future. This country's ocean should ultimately be explored, understood, and protected by the people who call it home.
What to Expect
We believe in honest preparation. Timor-Leste is a remarkable place to work, and it is not without its complexities. Infrastructure is developing. Supply chains can be unpredictable. Remote coastal environments demand flexibility and patience. What we offer is not a guarantee that everything will go smoothly - it is the experience to anticipate what might not, and the relationships on the ground to resolve it when it doesn't.
Teams that arrive with clear expectations, genuine curiosity, and a willingness to adapt will find Timor-Leste extraordinarily rewarding. We will do everything within our capability to make your expedition safe, efficient, and ethically grounded.
Every scientific expedition begins with a conversation. We want to understand your research goals, your timeline, your team composition, and your expectations - so that we can be honest about what is possible and build something that genuinely serves the work.
We welcome enquiries from research institutions, independent scientists, conservation organisations, and university field programmes. If you are considering Timor-Leste for your next expedition - or simply wondering whether it might be possible - we would love to hear from you.
