14th June 2026 – A New Journey Begins

Life seems to be a collection of journeys, intertwined into the finite time we are given. On this date, we choose to open up and share a new venture with you: the official birth of APE Timor–Leste.

We could write quite a story here, but instead, we have chosen to share much of that journey throughout our website. Rather than simply describing products and services, we wanted to offer something more human: an introduction to who we are, where we come from, and why we believe this work matters.

For us, there is no clear separation between personal life and professional life. We are dive professionals, yes, but we are also people learning how to show up with more clarity, care, discipline, curiosity, and service. Our bodies are our tools. Our minds must stay steady. Our hearts must remain open, especially when the work takes us into complex underwater environments - low visibility, strong currents, remote coastlines, and waters where crocodiles may patrol.

This past year has been a year of preparation. Of cooking, planning, dreaming, questioning, training, building, and listening. It has taken us across continents: back to where the seed of APE first began more than two decades ago, to the United Kingdom where Caz’s creative vision toward conservation first started to take shape, to Poland to meet the incredible minds behind Tecline, one of the principal brands we have chosen to work with, and to the underground rivers of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, where inspiration continues to flow through us.

It has included long conversations, brainstorming sessions, moments of uncertainty, moments of clarity, and many reminders of why we started this journey in the first place. We spent two months living aboard a vessel in Thailand, surrounded by the ocean, reflecting on our own personal and professional journeys, the lessons they had offered, and the kind of future we hoped to build.

We wanted to bring the best version of ourselves into this project.
Perhaps this sounds more like human development than the story of how a business begins. But for us, this is exactly where it begins.

Every detail of APE Timor–Leste has been considered with intention. The food we eat. The equipment we use. The partnerships we build. The assets we invest in. The premises we hope to grow into. The standards we hold ourselves accountable to. The relationships we nurture.

This past year was also the time required for trust to deepen and relationships to solidify, allowing us to build the team that now stands beside us. A team we hope will continue to grow, but one that already shares a common purpose: to live a life of service, to surrender deeply into the work, to remain curious, to continue learning, and to share what we know with others. To bring the best of ourselves forward - for each other, for ourselves, and for those we serve.

There is one more thing we would like to share about this day. For our opening day, we did not choose a formal ceremony, a ribbon cutting, or a corporate event. Instead, we chose to gather around a Mexican barbecue with friends, colleagues, and many of the young Timorese who have inspired this particular chapter of our lives. In many ways, they are the reason we are here.

Like many others, we first came to Timor–Leste because of the ocean. We came because of its reefs, its cetaceans, its unexplored waters, and the extraordinary marine environment that surrounds this island. The ocean may have been what brought us here, but it is not what made us stay. What made us stay are the people. The resilience of Timorese youth. Their sense of community. Their pride in their culture. Their willingness to support one another. Their ability to find joy, laughter, and hope, even through challenge.

Over the years, they have taught us far more than we could ever hope to teach them. When we think about the future, we are reminded that regardless of what becomes of us as individuals in the decades to come, and regardless of how the marine environment may change through time, they will still be here.
This is their homeland. These are their waters.

The future of this country, its communities, and its oceans will ultimately rest in their hands. If APE is to have any meaningful purpose, it is to contribute, in however small a way, to a future where they are empowered to lead, explore, protect, create, and shape the next chapter of Timor–Leste’s story.

Today, as we celebrate this beginning, we do so in gratitude for the people who welcomed us into their lives and allowed us to become part of theirs. More than anything, we are grateful to be walking alongside them, learning as we go.

So this is it.The beginning of APE Timor-Leste. Today, we say: we are ready. Ready to walk this path together. Ready to go diving with you. Ready to share what we know, with what we have. Ready to continue learning. Ready to grow by your side.

If you would like to understand more about who we are and what we do, we invite you to explore the stories throughout our website. For now, we simply want to say:

Welcome. Let us see where this new journey leads.

With love,
Carenza & Ivan
